Аболиционист [ abolitionists], один из основателей Американского общества борьбы с рабством [ American Anti-Slavery Society] (1833), редактор печатного органа Общества - журнала "Освободитель" ["The Emancipator"]. Привлек многих видных граждан штата Нью-Йорк к участию в аболиционистском движении. Его помощники (около 70 человек) выступали с лекциями в штатах Индиана и Огайо. В 1834 был исключен из семинарии Лейна [Lane Seminary] в г. Цинциннати за организацию диспута о рабстве, принял участие в создании Колледжа Оберлин [ Oberlin College]. В соавторстве с женой А. Гримке [ Grimke, Sarah and Angelina] написал трактат "Американское рабство как оно есть" ["American Slavery As It Is"] (1839), вдохновивший Г. Бичер-Стоу [ Stowe, Harriet Beecher] на создание романа "Хижина дяди Тома" [ Uncle Tom's Cabin].
